Bridal Vocab: Wedding Dress Lingo to Know before you Go Volume I: Silhouettes

Let’s play a little word game called “Is it bridal or a French dessert?”! Jacquard… Mikado… Bolero… Swarovsky? If you guessed bridal to all 4 of these, congrats- you’re correct!

We’ve come a long way in fashion trends since the first wedding dresses back in the 19th century. Fast forward to today- there is an entire bridal gown industry booming across the globe, dedicated to making brides’ visions come to life. Today we’ll be focusing on a key bridal category- Silhouettes! Read along to learn a few key words that will not only impress your stylists, but more importantly educate you on your journey to finding your dress!

Silhouettes

A silhouette is the shape or outline of a dress. Narrowing down your desired dress silhouette is step one in your gown shopping adventure! We always say here at Beloved that you should feel like you are wearing the dress, not the dress is wearing you. In other words- you shouldn’t feel swallowed up in a gown, we want you to shine through! Most dresses are fitted in the bodice, but skirt volume varies. Here are the most common wedding dress silhouettes to familiarize yourself with!

Mermaid

This fishy girl hugs your curves from waist to knee, then poofs out dramatically in volume at the bottom (much like a mermaid tail, hence the name!). She achieves that “sexy” look, but may require some practice walking with a kick and step motion.

Trumpet

A trumpet silhouette has the same fitted curves of a mermaid, but with a little bit of a smoother transition between the snug and voluminous parts of the dress (much like the instrument, you’re getting the hang of it now!)

Fit & Flare

Like a trumpet, but with an even smoother transition! These gowns sport a gradual fit to flare and softer shape on your frame. Known for its elongating visual powers, much like its trumpet and mermaid sisters!

Drop waist

A trendy pick in 2026! These gowns are fitted down to or just below the hip bone. They are known for their elongating effect on a torso.

Sheath/Column

This pretty, parallel silhouette is for brides who prioritize comfort and are looking for something not too overstated! These dresses have no marked waistline, a very short train (or no train at all), and naturally drop straight down on your body.

A-line

This popular silhouette is known for being universally flattering. If you know your alphabet, you know this silhouette! A-line skirts range from narrow to wide in volume. This can also be adjusted in alterations to have more or less!

Ballgown

Glinda’s specialty. Ballgowns are for the girlies who want to feel like a princess on their magical day! We’re talking poofy skirt volume for days; she was born to twirl. She is a feminine statement piece who commands her due attention! A material called crynalin is used to achieve that signature rounded skirt look.

Things to Consider

You may be asking “But Beloved, how will I ever pick just one silhouette from so many beautiful options?” Well, there are a few factors to consider that might help you filter through them. For example, your height could inform which shape you’re drawn to. Be curious about how each dress is making you feel! Is a dress making you feel elongated or compact? (Hint- it’ll often show in your body language and facial expressions!). How much physical movement does a dress allow? If you’re planning on tearin’ up the dance floor or traversing a hilly venue, perhaps a dress with some give will serve you best. How will a dress appear in photos? Oftentimes the human eye and camera lens will differ in interpretations. Higher color contrast between dress layers may help details pop in photos!

Imagination is usually required when trying on dresses, as these off-the-rack items were designed to fit a single mannequin. However, with the help of dress clips and your stylist’s expertise, you should be able to see if a dress is going to fit your one-of-a-kind body in a way that makes you feel most confident and comfortable! On your wedding day, what’s most important is that you feel like the most beautiful, elevated version of you. We hope you can trust us at Beloved Couture Bridal to help your wildest bridal dreams come true!
